Early Priorities & Common Mistakes
“Build steadily. The strongest stitches are not the ones sewn fastest — they are the ones that held.” — The Seamkeeper’s Codex, marginalia of the Fourth Age
The compounding mindset
Section titled “The compounding mindset”Everything in Ethereal Gate is a rate, not a number. A resource stockpile gets spent; a production level pays out forever. In your first days, always prefer the upgrade that increases future options:
- Production (Spirit Well, Ironbark Grove, Astral Mine) — pays out every hour you’re alive.
- Heart-Cairn — caps everything else; never let it lag more than a few levels.
- Research (Circle of Knowledge) — permanent bonuses; the Verdant branch multiplies priority #1.
- Training & healing capacity (Academy, Sylvan Grove, Healing Font) — grows the army you can field and refield.
- Everything else.
The five classic mistakes
Section titled “The five classic mistakes”1. Fighting before the Font is ready
Section titled “1. Fighting before the Font is ready”On a won fight, most of your fallen troops are wounded, not dead — they go to the Healing Font and can be restored for a fraction of their training cost (25 Essence and about a minute each at base). But the Font has finite capacity; if it’s under-leveled or already full, overflow losses are simply gone. Level the Font before you start hitting monster nodes, not after your first bad battle report.
2. Training to the cap “because it’s there”
Section titled “2. Training to the cap “because it’s there””Troops aren’t a score — they’re upkeep-free but they occupy Sylvan Grove capacity you’ll want for higher tiers later. A small, healthy, well-escorted army out-earns a big idle one. Train for your next errand, not your ego.
3. Ignoring the march send-sheet preview
Section titled “3. Ignoring the march send-sheet preview”The send sheet shows you expected travel time, haul, and — for combat — a battle forecast before you commit. The preview uses the same battle engine as the server, so it isn’t a guess; it’s the actual outcome distribution. If the preview looks bad, it is bad. Adjust your formation or pick a smaller snarl.
4. Leaving the Circle of Knowledge idle
Section titled “4. Leaving the Circle of Knowledge idle”Research time is the one resource you can’t gather back. There is always something worth studying — if you can’t afford your first-choice node, start a cheap one rather than nothing. Second March (Overseer branch) should be an early target: two marches means gathering and fighting at the same time.
5. Going it alone
Section titled “5. Going it alone”Alliances aren’t an endgame feature. Even a small alliance gives you shared research (three alliance tech trees), backup when a fight goes wrong, and people to actually talk to. Join one in your first days — you can always move later. See Alliances.
A healthy day-three Sanctuary looks like
Section titled “A healthy day-three Sanctuary looks like”- Production buildings a few levels up, upgrading whenever you log in
- Heart-Cairn keeping pace
- Two or three Verdant research nodes done, Second March queued or done
- A modest mixed army, Font leveled and empty
- An alliance tag next to your name
- First few monster nodes cleared for guardian XP
