Fragment: On the Closing — a Disputation
Minutes of a disputation held at the archive between Magistra Corvane (holding the Mercy) and the scholar Edrin Voss (holding the Abandonment), taken down by a junior Seamkeeper whose marginalia the order has, after some debate, elected to keep.
Voss: The sky, Magistra. I keep returning to the sky because you keep failing to account for it. Filled colour by colour, the fragments say — like a maker trying things. That is not the fingerprint of solemn purpose. That is delight. And delight, Magistra, is the least durable substance in any world. They made us the way a child makes a summer city of sand, and the tide that took them away was nothing worse than supper. No catastrophe. No mercy. Attention simply — went.
Corvane: And yet the door was closed carefully. You have stood at the half-mountain, Voss; you have seen the line where the strata stop. Clean as a blade. A bored child does not put the toys away and latch the box. A fleeing hand does not shut a door so it will not slam. Care is in that line. Someone closed the Gate the way you close a door on a sleeping household — someone protecting the sleepers from what walked in the hall.
Voss: Protecting! Then where is the warning? One line — one, in any fragment — that says “be brave, we shall return.” You find care in the latch. I find no note on the table. Which silence should the archive believe?
Corvane: The note may not have survived. Most things did not.
Voss: The convenient theory. Everything it needs, it lost.
(Marginal note, junior hand: Magistra C. silent a long while here. The water clock was loud.)
Corvane: Let me grant your sky, Voss, and see if you can bear mine. Say the delight was real. Say they loved the work the way the fragments smell of love — and say it was because they loved it that the Gate closed. Not boredom. Not flight. Have you never seen a maker take a thing from her own bench — a good thing, her best — and put it beyond her own reach, because her hands would not otherwise stop improving it? Because the next improvement would not have been the same chair?
Voss: …You are describing a fourth theory, Magistra. That is not the Mercy. In the Mercy, the danger comes from outside.
Corvane: Yes.
Voss: In this one the danger pours the light.
Corvane: Yes. And I will say no more of it, and you will not ask me to, and the young keeper in the corner will kindly stop writing.
(Marginal note, junior hand: I did not stop writing. An archive is permitted one locked drawer, but nothing said I must hand over the key before it is asked for. — And a later hand, older, likely the same keeper: Filed under the drawer at last. Forgive me, Magistra. You knew, or guessed, and grief made you kind. Whoever reads this: she never once looked at the fragments when she argued. She looked at her hands.)
