Fragment: Survey of the Root-Spine

Filed by a foundations surveyor of one of the first-generation Sanctuaries, with sketches (held separately). The order has cross-checked six further reports from five Sanctuaries. They agree. This is the first of the Signs, and the file grows yearly.

To the Overseer, respectfully, concerning the works under the west yard.

Your masons broke ground for the new Vault footing at the depth the plans require, and stopped, and sent for me, and I have been down there the better part of two days and will state plainly what I can prove and then, because you pay me for judgement as well as measurement, what I think.

What I can prove. At a depth of nine feet the excavation met living root, which is usual — we build on a seed; everything under us is Tree, eventually. What is not usual is the order of it. Roots wander. These do not wander. They run in a straight line bearing just north of west, in segments — each the length of a tall man, each ringed at both ends like a joint, each joined to the next — and the line does not stop at the ends of our dig. I sank test pits at forty feet and eighty feet along the bearing. It is there. It continues.

The grain of it is closed, like Ironbark — my auger would not bite, and I have augered Ironbark. And it is warm. I had each of my crew lay a bare hand on it separately, without telling them why, and each one said some version of the same thing, and I will write the version the youngest used, because it is the plainest: “It’s like the flank of something asleep.”

What I think. I have set foundations on Tree-root for thirty years. Root holds a Sanctuary the way a hand holds a cup — spread, cradling, still. This is not that. This is aligned. This has a direction of travel in it. Segment after ringed segment, like the backbone of something long and patient being grown joint by joint under our floors, with its head — if I may be permitted the word — pointed out toward the Unfinished Lands.

The Tree does nothing idly. Whatever it is weaving under your west yard, it is long, and it is strong-grained, and it is warm, and it is going somewhere. I do not know when, and I do not know carrying what.

My recommendation: move the Vault footing six feet south, and leave the line be. One does not build across a spine. One waits to see what wakes, and stands respectfully off the path it will take when it does.

Invoice enclosed. I have not charged for the second day. I would have paid you for it.
