Words of the World
A word kept exact is a small wall. The Fog’s whole work is the blurring of what things are; the order’s whole work is refusing. Use these words as written. — H.V.
The Ages — The Chronicle’s five chapters of the world so far: the Open Gate, the Closing, the Long Fraying, the Age of Sanctuaries, and the Present Watch, which is yours.
Astral Ore — Crystallised droplets of raw creation that fell unwoven during the First Rain. Dug at the Astral Mine, salvaged from the Unfinished Lands. It comes up warm. Nobody talks about the warm.
The Braided — Great composite Echoes found in the deepest snarls: loop wound on loop until it stands like a champion. Thick, not finished. There is a difference, and it is the difference that lets us cut them.
The Closing — The day the Ethereal Gate shut and the in-pouring of creation stopped, leaving the world half-made. Why it closed is the great disputation; see the Chronicle’s second Age, and do not expect it settled.
The Devourer — The menders’ name for the last working Loomwright, called in one fragment Ythrenn, the Unfinished Hand, which weaves at the world’s heart with salvaged pattern for thread. Scattered by allied marches; never killed; weaving again within the week.
Echo — What remains when an unravelling stalls partway: a loop of last-thread pattern, repeating its one kept gesture. Not alive, not evil, not able to be otherwise. Cutting the loop is mercy, not conquest.
Essence — See Spirit Essence. The old salvagers just say “thread.”
The Ethereal Gate — The closed aperture through which creation poured into the world. The title of everything; the hope of the long arc. The Gate closed; a gate can open.
The First Rain — The age within the first Age when unwoven creation fell as droplets and hardened where it landed. Origin of all Astral Ore.
Frayed — Of a woven soldier: cut down but pattern-intact, and so recoverable at the Healing Font. Distinct from unravelled, which is the true loss. The distinction divides the history of the war.
Guardians — The finished patterns; the Ten. Beings woven complete in the first Age (one excepted — see the Kept Flame), immune to the Fog’s pulling, able to grow as nothing else grown-since can. Four finished as walls (the Vanguard), six as instruments (the Mystics).
The Loomwrights — The first-made artisans who worked the raw in-pouring into finished things under the Gate’s light. The oldest places in the world are their work. One survives, and cannot stop.
Mender — Any hand that holds a stitch against the fraying; the order’s plain word for Overseers, Seamkeepers, and every soul on a wall. The world is unfinished; menders are not excused from it.
Overseer — The seed-chosen: the one a Sanctuary’s seed answered. The title is older than the Age of Sanctuaries, and the order keeps its guesses about that in the locked drawer.
Pattern / the Weave — What everything is made of; the world’s fabric, poured through the Gate and never finished. Thin pattern frays. Loud pattern holds. Yours is the loudest thing your people will ever stand inside.
Resonance field — The span in which a Sanctuary-seed’s pattern outvoices the whisper; the stillness inside your walls. Its edge is the seam you keep.
The Root-Spine — First of the Signs: long, jointed, warm-grained root-lines growing beneath the oldest Sanctuaries, aligned and going somewhere. The Tree prepares. See the fifth Age.
Sanctuary (Sylvan Sanctuary) — A seed of the World-Tree grown into a small loom, holding one span of the Weave closed. Not a fortress: a stitch.
The Seamkeepers — The order of menders who walk the seams and keep this Codex, founded by Halcyon Vey on the rule that fits on a knife: keep what frays.
Seam — The boundary where a resonance field meets the Unfinished Lands; also, a bond sewn between allied Sanctuaries. The order is named for walking the first kind and, increasingly, for tending the second.
The Signs — The three unexplained matters of the Present Watch: the Root-Spine, the places that remember their watch, and the nights the whisper gathers. The file grows. The order watches.
Snarl — A tangle of many Echoes holding one another’s repeating in place. The marches cut them; the deep ones hold the Braided. Marked on your map where the Lookout Tower can see them.
Spirit Essence — Raw, unpatterned thread, seeping from the World-Tree’s roots into every Spirit Well. What everything else is made from — walls, soldiers, mendings, all of it.
The Three Strands — Earth, Water, Fire: the three tensions a pattern can be woven at. Strand answers strand in a circle — Earth frays Water, Water frays Fire, Fire frays Earth — and like calls to like: a Guardian standing with soldiers of its own Strand makes their pattern louder.
The Unfinished Lands — Everything beyond the resonance fields: half-made terrain under a thin sky, where the work-site of the first Age became the weather of the third. Where the salvage is, and the snarls, and the whisper.
Unravelled — Taken past pattern; the true death. What the Font cannot mend. The word is used exactly, or not at all.
The Whisper-Fog — The unravelling of the half-made world, made visible; the forgetting that gathers where pattern runs thin. Not an army, not a will, not defeatable — only out-sung, stitch by stitch. It sounds tired. Do not listen. Write down what you heard.
The World-Tree — The knot: first thing the in-pouring made that could make things in turn, through whose roots every thread of the Weave somewhere runs. It does not speak. It prepares.
Woven, the — The Grove’s lent soldiers: the Ancient Guardian (Earth’s patience), the Biolume Sprite (Water’s flow), the Sylvan Stalker (Fire’s hunger). Pattern lent, not granted; frayed, they return to the Font; their lending ended, they return to the loom. The song says the rest.
